Hazards: Food Dyes: Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6

She is one of my top go-to's for 
information about *any* topic under the sun.
She is amazing & I'm so grateful for her!

After watching that video - it stirred my brain and 
got my research juices flowing.
Last year, I did research on these topics:

Now, I'm on to a similar topic:
artificial food dyes.
Just to give you a perspective,
below is a list of foods that 
contain each dye.

These are ingredients that are found in many
prepackaged foods in the US.
Snacks that we've grown accustomed to
seeing that align the aisles in
grocery stores, convenience stores and the like.

Foods like:
(not a comprehensive list)
Crescent Rolls
Funfetti Cake Mix
Yellow Cake mix
Lucky Charms
Fruity Pebbles
many Light'n Fit nonfat yogurts
Hi-C Fruit Punch & Boppin Berry
Minute Maid Orange Soda
Sunkist Orange Soda
some Gatorade flavors
Hawaiian Punch Fruit Punch
Kraft Catalina Salad Dressing
many Kraft Barbecue Sauces
Betty Croker Hamburger Helper Lasagna
Betty Crocker Disney Princess Fruit Snacks
Hershey's Lite Syrup, Strawberry Syrup
Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars

and the list goes on and on!

cotton candy  
soft drinks  
energy drinks  
instant puddings  
flavored tortilla chips such as Doritos  
breakfast cereals 
cake mixes, pastries 
pudding powders  
flavored rices such as paella   
powdered drink mixes  
sports drinks 
ice cream  
ice pops 
chewing gum  
Yellow 6:

baked goods

The problem with these dyes
(and not limited to these three dyes!)
is that these serve NO
nutritional value whatsoever.

These dyes are for the eye only,
to enhance the appearance
of each of the foods they are in.
There are a lot of theories
that link these dyes to:

carcinogens found in the body 
memory loss 
weight gain

Can food still retain their integrity
and taste without these
{potentially} harmful ingredients?

Great Britain has eliminated the use of
these dyes in their foods.
Big names that we are used to
in the US such as:

Aunt Jemima
Froot Loops
Lucky Charms
The question is - if they can do it there...why do they NOT do it here?
Well, the FDA has been approached many times
about this topic, and in their infinite wisdom opinion,
they do not have sufficient evidence
to make the same connections as the Brits.

SO. Where does that leave us?
We are left to take matters into our own hands.
You or your children suffering with allergies?
You or your children prone to hyperactivity or 'foggy memory'?
You or your children have cancer in the family?

Then *why not* take a step to eliminate
food dyes in the foods you eat?

How do we do that?
Watch where you shop.
You don't have to read the labels at stores like

They have vowed to 
not sell dyed food
in their stores, 
and with their name
on the products.
Cook your own food!
With sites like:

And those are just naming the tip of the iceberg.
 With these sites,
you will have access to recipes
to suit your budget, skill or time allowances.
There are SO many different articles
written about this topic.
This article is just to serve as a starting point
and to give you a few links so
you can do further research on your own.

Asking questions is important for us,
and to not blindly accept a 'norm'
is not just ignorant, but potentially damaging
to your health of the health of your loved ones.

thank you for posting this it has been on my mind recently! I've been trying to start buying most of our products from Trader Joes and cut out the dyes in other areas. I'm gonna go check out the other blogs you recommended too :)

there is always so much to learn about the foods we eat in this country. I'm just sure there's more to everything than we even know.

LOVE this post. It was like reading a mini research project. Great information. And, I was allergic to red food coloring as a kid-my mom had to completely eliminate it from my diet, beacuase it caused me to BOUNCE off the walls.

Thank you for this post... My eyes have been opened to many food related stories lately, mostly due to my son who studied food science. We have weaned many things out of our home with still a good deal of work to be done. This is the kind of story we all need to read! I have shared it on my FB for my family to see.

You probably know my opinion on food dyes from my blog. I'm VERY passionate about what we eat and how it affects learning and behavior. I think the more we have these conversations, the better. Time to start voting against food dye with the wallet. Sad we can't trust the FDA to look out for our children. Time for the mamas to step in and speak up! Glad you did with this post!

I though this was a really good informative blog. Well done!

In the UK we had an outcry about the use of food colourings in the 80's and I can't actually remember when food items began to change but now producer's use natural dyes and this is stated as part of their advertising.
As a Brit I love reading through blogs from around the world but have often gag at the colourful over the top food creations. The red multi coloured cake was one of the times. Surely it's all about taste and wanting to put something inside you that looks like its not only going to taste good but looks like it's going to do you good? The mulit- coloured foods, and I am sure other Brits would agree, just look like you are going to eat a child's paint box.
We also had the flavouring debate going on as well and many of our products now use natural flavouring. Both these things have been linked to a number of health issues and also hyperactive children. It's really worth going down the natural road and saving the pretty colours to the paint box.
